Lens Updates

Posted by Christine on July 31, 2008

I’ve lost count as to the last time I updated my progress on squidoo lenses. I am up to 11 now.

This one is about travel books, specifically real life travels by women.

I find these very inspiring and always dream of someday doing my own travel around the world journey. So this page is dedicated to all these brave women out there who dare to live fully:

Church Bulletin Bloopers

Posted by Christine on July 29, 2008

I have been posting hilarious church bulletin bloopers on another blog and wanted to share with you over here too… so I’ve pick a few that I particularly like.

You can read the entire set (3 posts) by visiting my other blog:
—> Can Do Mind Set

Here goes… hold on to your chair, some of these are literally laugh out loud funny.

Bertha Belch, a missionary form Africa, will be speaking tonight at Calvary Methodist.
Come hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa.

Miss Charlene Mason sang “I will not pass this way again,” giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

Barbara remains in the hospital and needs blood donors for more transfusions. She is also having trouble sleeping and requests tapes of Pastor Jack’s sermons.

A Bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

Attend and you will hear an excellent speaker and heave a healthy lunch.

The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind.
They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

Ha, ha, ha…
Remember, for the complete set of bloopers, see here: Can Do Mind Set

In Colorado this summer

Posted by Christine on July 26, 2008

I am spending a few days in Longmont, Colorado this summer. It’s a relatively small town about 20 minutes north of Boulder, and I love it. First off, and contrary to what I have back home, everything I could ever need for my day to day living is accessible within minutes. Which means that I can resonably walk or ride my bike, a very good thing not only for my personal health, but that of the planet as well -to say nothing of my pocket book.

What if I want a little more entertainment? As I said, Boulder, is only 20 minutes or so away by car… or… I can load up the bicycle and ride the bus. How about that! Ok, ok, I know. Lots of people do this all the time. It’s just that this is not what I experience at home.

I live in a small, small town with nothing but the old settlers, a couple tiny gorcery stores which I use only for emergencies and that’s it. Well ok, it does have a post office, a city hall, a small art gallery, a library, and more than enough gas stations. I just meant as far as what I need for food. There is a Super HEB (which I love) about 8 miles away, where I do most of my shopping. I have to say, HEB has gotten really good with there organic produce selection in the last few years, and this being a “super” store, I find about 95% of what I need no problem.

So, back to Longmont. So far I rode my bike to the park, to the recreation center to check them out, to the library, around the neighborhoods to look at houses, and to the old downtown to walk around and enjoy the architecture and afternoon.

I’ve also gone hiking in the mountains and gone to listen to live music on Pecan Street, in Boulder, a summer thing. People were hangin around, having pic-nics, visiting, listening to the music, dancing, etc. Families with children and adults. Very cool and fun.

And while I’m up here, I also work on fun stuff like Extraordinary Travel Books by Ordinary (and not so ordinary) Women.

Ahhh, summer. It’s nice to be here.
I hope you are having an equally pleasant time, wherever you may be.

New Belleville Press -an independent publisher with a vision

Posted by Christine on July 19, 2008

New Belleville Press is an independent publisher newly out on the town and still in infancy. To be honet here, the founder is François Pointeau, my brother, and a passionate guy when it comes to out-of-the-ordinary literature genre.

The site: http://www.NewBellevillePress.com

New Belleville Press currently has 2 books:

Both books have received and continue to get tremendous reviews. You won’t be wasting your time or money -and I say this not because it’s my brother’s work here, but because I truly believe it. Otherwise you would not be reading this right here today.

Do you believe in supporting independent businesses? Small publishers, small books stores, Mom&Dad little neighborhood stores, etc., are all on the endangered list nowdays, what with all the mega-stores popping up at every intersection. I encourage you to drop in for a visit, if only that, and check it out for yourself. If you feel so inclined, buy something. You’ll be supporting a great cause and a starting up independently owned business.

The vision for New Belleville Press is quality, relatively small run of stories that have something different to offer. Not the kind that you find at a dime a dozen in 3 story bookstores, but the kind that all too often major publishers will not look at twice because it’s not “formula.” This is one site to look out for. Bookmark it. Better yet, sign up for the newsletter so you can keep up with the news.

Around The World In 80 Days

Posted by Christine on July 7, 2008

Have you read the Jules Verne classic Around The World In 80 Days?

Jules Verne was way ahead of his time with his adventure stories. I’ve always loved this particular one, and have also seen all 3 movie versions that I know of. The old classic with David Niven is the best, as far as elegance and faithfullness to the original text.

The came Pierce Brosnan as Phileas Fogg, a fun, though average, kid friendly type movie. The directors and writers took some liberties with the stories.

Finally, the spoof with Jackie Chan as Fogg’s valet Passepartout. This one is more comedy and farce than anything, with Chan getting plenty of opportunities to act the clown and display his able stunts. Fogg here is a “crazy professor” type waging he can go around the world using his own inventions.

Last but certainly NOT least, is Michael Palin‘s own journey around the world. He was challenged to follow in Fogg’s foot steps as closely as he could, within the same frame of 80 days, and traveling only with transportation that would have been available at the time.

Palin is a wonderful host and adventurer, good natured, empathetic to the people he meets, and aptly armed with a must for this kind of travel: a sense of humor. The journey was aired on BBC television as a 7 episode series and received great reviews.

I am putting together a squidoo lens comparing his journey with that of Fogg.

Check it out so far here –> www.squidoo.com/AroundTheWorldIn80Days

There is more to come. I have Fogg’s journey up already and will be working on Palin’s soon.

:-)
