Eco Domes and how to build one

Posted by Christine on August 17, 2008

I am fascinated by traditional type housing, earth building material, and any and all type of crazy do-it-yourself shelters that people seem to come up with.

I quite by accident stumbled onto Eco-Domes by Cal-Earth Institutes , and instantly loved the way these houses feel and look. The houses are simply build of sand bags and covered in stucco type material, giving them a very earthy appearance. Nader Khalili is the visionary, architect, and founder behind the Cal-Earth Institute.

Upon reading further, I came to find that this group helps people all over the world build shelters for themselves. They also have apprenticeship programs to learn the entire procedure. A great majority of the graduating students then go on to spread their knowledge through helping others.

Off course, now being an official squidoo addict, I had to build a lens…

I give you lens #13…   –>  http://www.squidoo.com/eco-dome

I’ve included videos from youtube that show the building. It’s in fast forward so you can see the entire dome house go up in a matter of a few minutes. Have fun.

This is so interesting. Thank you for posting. I’m seriously considering building a home in this way. Thanks again!

  2. If you do, let me know about your experience. I’d love to hear about it.

That would survive an earthquake? Take some engineering courses, please!
